Holding a small population of approximately 1,500, Herberton is a picturesque country town, with its laid back pace, notable history and friendly locals. Established in 1880, Herberton was originally a tin mining base situated at the nearby Herbert River. Since almost the entire area was very rich in minerals, mining activities at Herberton continued until the early 1980s.

The backbone of Herberton's economy is agriculture, with a promising future in potatoes and maize production. The town is also a prime educational center with a number of trusted private and state schools that hold primary, secondary and college education programs. Aside from that, Herberton has several farmstay and homestay establishments in the countryside as well as a number of hotel and motel units for visiting tourists and backpackers.

The famous tourist spots in Herberton are its museums and galleries. Most of the old buildings built during the town's early period still stand and are now pride tourist attractions of Atherton Tablelands.  Although its main historical site closed on April 2003, the town still has other worthwhile places for tourists to explore. The Herberton Historical Village and Museum, for instance, is one solid tourist destination that holds historical artifacts found in the highlands of Cairns. It is generally composed of 32 buildings, including a miner's hut, an old school, a bank, a telephone exchange, a presbytery, a slab hut dating and a pub. Admission in this top historical ground is free, thus making it a must-see site for all visitors and tourists.  

Mount Hypipamee National Park offers fascinating scenery of the Herberton lands. The park is set amidst the rainforest-filled mountains, making it a fine tour spot for nature lovers. It holds the volcanic formations of Tablelands and the famous crater that was formed by violent explosions. As for those who love waterfalls, the Dinner Falls is a fantastic sight to behold as it cascades down the narrow area below the crater.

Another exciting activity at Herberton is the day trip train ride with Railco's 1920's steam train. Railco offers daily train trips on Queensland's steepest and highest mountain railway that passes through the Carrington Falls en route. Also, the town features an interesting photo gallery attraction called the Black and White photographic gallery. Located at the town's 49b Grace Street, the gallery specializes in hand-painted black and white pictures.
