Reef Teach

Reef Teach is a company headquartered in the centre of Cairns that is run and fully controlled by Paddy Colwell, a dive instructor and educationalist. His main thrust for establishing the company is to help tourists develop an interest in the Great Barrier Reef. It is also geared toward teaching scuba diving to people.

Reef Teach holds tutorials for individuals with the desire to learn the basics of scuba diving. These courses are divided into several modules. The courses are designed to allow a student to move to different levels from the fundamental knowledge to becoming a diving instructor. Initially, the students are evaluated to determine the depth of their experience and knowledge of scuba diving.

During the training, the students are taught how important proper scuba diving gears are. In general, each course is a live-aboard experience, which means one gets to live in a vessel for several days with the instructors and other students. The number of days usually depends on the course and package. Ideally, the basic course may last up to five days. The program wears on until the student is fit enough to become a certified scuba diver. Prior to the trip, the student will be given an alternative propulsion method. There are two methods of propulsion: sailing vessel and motor driven. The sailing vessel option is ideal for people who do not like engine smoke. In most cases, a sailing vessel still includes an engine since wind is eliminated from the equation.

The basic course in scuba diving has three accommodation packages--budget, standard and the premium package. Each of the accommodation rates allows single and twin sharing. The range of accommodation lies between $915 to $1447 dollars.

Aside from the basics of scuba diving, the student will also be taught the importance of using the snorkel, which is a must for the course. Prior to the dive, the student will have to undergo a medical examination to determine his fitness to complete the course. The basic course lasts for five days. A couple of days are allotted in the vessel going to the Great Barrier Reef. The course also includes transfer to and from the airport. However, for the budget package, single airport transfer is only allowed.

Reef Teach is also a centre where people will not only learn the basics of diving, but also the proper manners that divers must have while underwater.  The center encourages people to appreciate the beauty of the underwater scenery and to learn the importance of the Great Barrier Reef not only to Australia, but also to the whole world.
