Hichinbrook Island
Off the coast of the town of Cardwell, Hichinbrook Island is a diverse, topographically gifted vacation spot that visitors consciously equate to a paradise of beaches, coral reefs, mangroves, waterfalls, virgin rainforests, rugged mountains teaming with marine life like dugongs and sea turtles. Measuring almost 40 square kilometers and having been impressively preserved, it is hailed as Australia's Largest Island National Park. For almost a hundred years, it has become uninhabited and secluded from the neighboring towns caused by the rich mangrove terrain at the Hinchinbrook Channel. Though separated and only a small portion of the place is available for visitors, you'll never fear being isolated in any way as soon as you land your feet on its powdery sand.
Things to Do
There are a good number of ways to enjoy your island getaway. Get into an intimate, romantic set-up as you gaze into the seemingly sparkling blue seawater below the blue stretch of skies. Walk along the beach shore, and be amazed with how your feet comb the white sand. Have some time swimming in the blue ocean waters with Mount Bowen as a witness to your fun. Put out your rod and bait, go out fishing and expect to be amazed with the variety of fish that you might catch (since the island is being protected, environment-friendly measures are best encouraged). Then, try snorkeling and let the colorful formation of the coral reefs and fishes delight you.
Yet, if you wish for another intimate encounter with nature, select from among several camping sites available in Hinchinbrook Island that are complete with facilities and amenities. For an even greater fishing experience and better view of the Missionary, Goold Island and Mount Bowen, proceed to Macushla. From that spot, rainforest and swimming beaches are also available. Goold Island, situated in an extensive sheltered beach, also offers a great camping experience perfect for swimming and oyster gathering.
For a more thrilling and adventurous experience, you can do some trekking and enjoy the splendor of Thorsborne Trail (sometimes referred to as the East Coast Trail). As you commence the three-to-seven-day trekking, anticipate coming across lush forest, alluring ocean waters and streams. Campsites are also available with fresh waterfalls and mountain stream waters. But trekking without a permit is strictly not allowed so best to apply for a permit ahead. It is also advised to bring fuel stoves, insect repellents, light food and other items expected necessary for the long walk.
In Hichinbrook Island, reaching Mount Bowen is also an adventurous expedition. Having the tallest peak in the Hinchinbrook Island, Mount Bowen is reachable within a day and a half for neophyte climbers. A permit is also needed but only a limited number is issued. Meanwhile, Mount Straloch is likewise available for climbers but knowledge of the trails is required to ensure a safe climb.
Being an isolated island, the only place to settle here is in the Hinchinbrook Island Wilderness Lodge and Resort, which accommodates visitors in "timber treehouses" for a unique and intimate commune with nature. Select any comfortable space displaying the delightful view of the combined blues and greens and hear the natural sound of the birds above the skies as you hum your own version of music. Take time to capture the breathtaking sunset while sipping your tropical drink.
Whether you're hunting for a place to relax, enjoy the tranquility of nature, or to rediscover an unspoiled patch of earth, Hinchinbrook Island will always be the perfect choice to go. Summer or not, holidays or birthdays, honeymoon or anniversaries, excite yourself and treat your friends with a vacation in an isolated paradise.
